How do I add Taxable Investments & Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs)?
When youโre just getting started with ProjectionLab itโs important to add your assets. Outside of your real assets like a house or car, youโll want to add your investment accounts โ including taxable brokerage accounts and tax-advantaged retirement accounts like Traditional and Roth IRAs.
Add Taxable Investments
Go to Current Finances in the left sidebar > choose Investments > click + Add Investments > click Taxable Investments. Want more details? Check out what you will need to add below.
When you add a Taxable Investment account, a new Taxable Investment line item will show on your Investments page. You will need to update your total balance and the owner, i.e. you or your spouse if applicable.
Additionally, above the Owner dropdown menu you will see Cost: $0. Click on that to input the amount paid for all holdings in this account, i.e. the cost basis. This is used when calculating capital gains tax on withdrawals.
Note
The contribution basis should be routinely updated to accurately reflect any recent contributions. Additional contributions can make a material impact on your plan.
Add Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs)
Go to Current Finances in the left sidebar > choose Investments > click + Add Investments. You can choose from four types of Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) including: IRA, Roth IRA, Inherited IRA, or Inherited Roth IRA. Each type of retirement account will prompt you to add slightly different information. Want more details? Check out what you will need to add below.
IRA
When you add an IRA, also known as a Traditional IRA, a new IRA line item will show on your Investments page. You will need to update your total balance and the owner, i.e. you or your spouse if applicable.
Roth IRA
When you add a Roth IRA, a new Roth IRA line item will show on your Investments page. Similar to an IRA, you will need to update your total balance and the owner, i.e. you or your spouse if applicable.
Additionally, above the Owner dropdown menu you will see Contributions: $0. Click on that to input your total past contributions. Past Roth IRA contributions can be withdrawn any time without penalty. If youโre already over retirement age, this value may not affect your results.
Note
The contribution basis should be routinely updated to accurately reflect any recent contributions. Additional contributions can make a material impact on your plan.
Inherited IRA & Inherited Roth IRA
When you add an Inherited IRA or Inherited Roth IRA, a new Inherited IRA line item will show on your Investments page. Similar to an IRA, you will need to update your total balance and the owner, i.e. you or your spouse if applicable.
Additionally, above the Owner dropdown menu you will see 1950-2024 and a tombstone icon. Click on that to input the month and year of the birth and death of the original owner. These inputs help estimate the distribution schedule for your Inherited IRA.
