What's the difference between what's shown in the Plan tab and Chance of Success?

Updated Aug 18, 2026Aug 18, 2026

The Plan tab shows one fixed version of your financial future, based on the account balances, income, expenses, and growth rates youโ€™ve entered. The Plan tab will use one fixed growth rate applied evenly each year.

The Chance of Success tab shows a range of possible outcomes for that same plan. It runs many trials using historical or randomized market data, so things like investment returns, dividends, and inflation vary from trial to trial, rather than staying fixed like they are in the Plan tab. You can check out more details on the Monte Carlo simulation.

Both use the same underlying plan info, though itโ€™s normal for these two numbers to be different. Neither outcome is more correct โ€“ instead, the Chance of Success tab tests your plan against historical and probabilistic scenarios. All other tabs follow the values and assumptions from the Plan tab, not the outcomes created in Chance of Success.
